Work Right Agriculture – Your Farm – Your Future.
HSE has launched a campaign to help reduce farm vehicle deaths & injuries. The campaign is entitled Work Right Agriculture – Your Farm – Your Future.
Agriculture consistently has the highest number of deaths and injuries of all sectors in Great Britain (per 100,000 workers). HSE want to make 2023 a safer year on our farms by working together.
Moving vehicles are the highest cause of deaths in British farming. These incidents account for 30% of all fatal injuries over the
past 5 years. That’s 48 avoidable tragedies that have destroyed families in the farming community. HSE are asking farms to look at three key elements -:
SAFE FARM
Be smart. Keep people and vehicles apart. It is important to keep people and moving vehicles apart to keep everyone safe. With 48 lives tragically lost in incidents involving moving vehicles on British farms in just the past 5 years, the lives of those on your farm really are in your hands.
SAFE DRIVER
Being a safe driver cost nothing and could save a life. The key messages are,
• Use the handbrake every time use SAFE STOP.
• Always think visibility – Whatever your vehicle, ensure mirrors and windows on your vehicle are clean so you can see
what is around you.
• Training is vital to help keep everyone safe. Before using any vehicle on a farm, it is important you have been trained to use that specific vehicle safely.
Around 60% of runover incidents on British farms could have been prevented if a handbrake was used..
SAFE VEHICLE
Vehicles work hard on farms so it is vital they are checked and maintained regularly to detect faults and prevent mechanical
failures. Safety checks help protect you, your family and your farm.
Around 50% of deaths involving moving vehicles could have been prevented if the vehicles were in order.
