
We provide high quality, relevant, cost effective training for agriculture and other land based businesses in Cambridgeshire, Essex, south Norfolk and Suffolk.
We are a not for profit training provider, with a 30 year track record. We currently have approximately 160 member businesses covering arable, livestock, vegetable and fruit farming, food processing, horticulture, wine production, horse racing industry, grain trading, forestry and arboriculture. Many of our farming members have also diversified into tourism, leisure and other businesses. We have been able to tailor courses to help them establish these new enterprises:-
Case Study 1 – A farming business near Haverhill, originally arable and dairy, and a member of the Group for many years has recently converted a period barn into a high quality conference and wedding venue. Having provided for the training and development needs of the farm staff for many years, we were then able to provide the business, marketing and IT training needs that were required for a successful launch.
Case Study 2 – A large arable and vegetable farm in the fens has invested in a vegetable processing and packing plant. The business has used the Group for training for farm staff for many years, and we are now also providing for their food hygiene and Health and Safety needs, both on the farm and in the factory.
» Maintenance & Crosscutting
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that chainsaws and related equipment are operated only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. We can provide training and assessment to Lantra standard or training in preparation for NPTC assessment for CS30.
Course Duration – 2 days
The course will cover the following elements: how to keep the chainsaw in a good condition, how to protect yourself and operate the machinery safely, site safety awareness, personal protective clothing, chainsaw safety features and crosscutting and timber stacking.
» Basic Felling & Felling Small Trees
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that chainsaws and related equipment are operated only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use. We can provide training and assessment to Lantra standard or training in preparation for NPTC assessment for CS31.
Course Duration – 2 days
The course will cover the following elements: preparation, felling up to 200mm for Lantra and up to 380mm for CS31, site safety and PPE, environmental and legal requirements, de-limbing, and takedown of hung up trees.
» Brush Cutters & Trimmers
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that chainsaws and related equipment are only operated by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use.
Course Duration – 2 days
The course will cover the following, maintenance (engine, drive system and gear head), selecting the appropriate cutting head, maintaining and fitting the cutting head, correct personal protective clothing, adjusting the machine and harness, inspecting the site and identifying hazards, fuelling, starting the machine, cutting a test area and after-care and safe transportation.
» Woodchippers

Course Duration – 1 day
The course will cover the following: regulations and industry best practice, preparation, operator maintenance and pre-work checks, safe operation and conversion to transport position.
» Stump Grinders
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that chainsaws and related equipment are only operated by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use.
Course Duration – 1 day
The course will cover the following: regulations and industry best practice, preparation, operator maintenance and pre-work checks, safe operation and conversion to transport position.
» Powered Pole Pruners
The course is aimed at anyone employed in arboriculture, forestry, horticulture, landscaping and ground maintenance. It prepares candidates for assessment for NPTC Certificate of Competence unit CS48.
Course Duration: 1 day
The course will cover engine maintenance; drive mechanism and cutting head, Health & Safety aspects, PPE, starting and use of the pole pruner.
» Coppicing
This course covers the principles and practice of coppiced woodland management. Participants must have a basic chain saw certificate.
» Hedge Laying
This two day course will enable participants to undertake hedge laying to suit the local style, this will include hedge maintenance the care of hedge laying tools and correct safety procedures.
Course Duration - 2 days
» Basic Tree Survey
This course covers tree inspection training at a basic level for contractors, highway engineers, tree wardens, grounds maintenance staff, rangers and other persons of a non-arboriculture background, enabling them to identify obvious defects from ground level and report their findings.
Course Duration – 1 day
The course will cover the following aspects, the legal and safety implications of hazardous trees, risk assessment, recognition of hazardous trees, deciding on an appropriate course of action, collecting and maintaining adequate information and recognition of your own limitation.
» Professional Tree Inspection
The course will provide tree survey, inspection and management training at an advanced level for competent arboriculturists. To allow them to identify defects from ground level or a climbed inspection, then to specify the necessary control measures and record their actions as part of an identifiable, defensible system.
Course Duration – 3 days
Candidates will be assessed during the course and successful completion will result in the award of a Lantra Awards ITA Certificate.
